Does life ever feel like it gets the best of you? Do you feel overwhelmed or exhausted? Let’s take a peeksy at your situation and see if this little trick will help you. This is a short post that can make a huge impact when used appropriately.
Once upon a time, about 7 or 8 years ago, I was about to fall apart over one little thing… The house was a mess.
Every room was untidy, toys and laundry were everywhere, and I could not keep up. I had just cleaned the living room, only to turn around and see that it had turned into a disaster again. What was I to do?
I’ll tell you what I did.
I leaned over the back of a chair and cried. Well, I tried to cry. Tears weren’t really coming and the whole thing felt forced.
I wanted to cry because in the past, I’ve found that a good cry is a great release for me! And I wanted to release all my frustrations.
But as I stood there, hunched over the rocking chair, a thought came to mind.
I remembered a story I had heard in the news recently of a family near me who lost 2 children in a car accident.
I did not know them, but my heart cried for them. I thought of the mother and what she would give to have a messy house. Messes created by those sweet little ones who are no longer here.
In an instant, I went from feeling overwhelmed and thinking “poor me”, to realizing that I had no problems! I popped up and said out loud “I’m good!” Then I went on to clean things up and felt happy as I did so.
This is the power of gratitude mixed with perspective. When you see what you have and how huge of a blessing it is, sometimes the “frustrating little things” just go away.
The next time you’re feeling weighed down or overcome, try taking a few breaths as you think how grateful you are for the people and things in your life (noting that you truly are blessed, as there are others who have lost or don’t have what you do).
I know that this is not a quick fix to every single hardship.
I also know that it does have its place.
Use it when it’s helpful, and be sure NOT to use it against yourself or others.
For example, if you are actually experiencing the heartache of losing a loved one, don’t expect yourself to be able to say “Well, at least I still have these other loved ones with me!”, and think that you should feel better.
That would obviously not be appropriate, nor would it feel good.
So how do you know when to use this trick, and when to find other methods of healing?
I think you’ll know…
But if you’re unsure, it never hurts to give it a try! It’s never a bad thing to count your blessings, and even if it doesn’t take away the pain you’re going through, it will at least momentarily help lift your spirits a bit.
So if it works like a light switch, then GREAT!
If it doesn’t seem to do anything… that’s ok. There’s nothing wrong with you.
It’s ok to feel broken.
Definitely not the best feeling in the world, but it’s ok.
So as with anything, choose for yourself if this is something you want to try.
Have you ever had a change in perspective flip your mood so quick? Tell me about it in the comments!
God bless you my friend…
